Mostly wisdom teeth, rarely teeth such as canines or premolars, may not completely erupt in the mouth for any reason. While impacted teeth do not cause any complaints in some patients, they often cause problems such as pain, infection, halitozis (bad breath) , food impaction, difficulty in mouth opening and facial swelling.
Impacted teeth can be in two different positions in the jaw: Mucosal retantion, that is covered only by the gingiva. Bone retantion, covered by both gingiva and bone.
In diagnosis, radiological examinations are required in addition to clinical examination. 3D dental volumetric tomography may be required to examine its position relative to the nerves in the lower jaw and the sinuses in the upper jaw.
How is the operation performed?
A sterile operation area is prepared in the dental office. Under local anesthesia, a gingival incision is made around the impacted tooth, if necessary, the bone tissue is removed or the tooth is divided into pieces. The operation site is sutured and the process is terminated. The patient is prescribed antibiotic, painkiller and mouthwash. It is recommended not to consume hot things for three days after the operation, not to spit frequently, not to use alcohol and cigarettes. Swelling or bruising may occur on the patient’s face during the healing process. After about a week, the suture are removed.
